Today is World Osteoporosis Day. Osteoporosis is a disease where the bones lose their density and become weak, leading to painful fractures.
Every three seconds, a bone will break somewhere in the world as a result of the disease. That’s 20 bones a minute. Or 1,200 in an hour. Clearly, awareness needs to be raised. Because osteoporosis is a largely preventable condition.
That’s what World Osteoporosis Day is for. In fact, World Osteoporosis Day kicks off a year-long campaign aimed at helping to prevent the disease, which the International Osteoporosis Foundation argue can be done with three simple lifestyle steps.
2) Regular weight-bearing exercise. Putting demand on your bones encourages higher bone density. Activities such as dancing and brisk walking or anything that involves running are ideal.
3) Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps to strengthen bones by encouraging calcium absorption. It also aids bone renewal. The International Osteoporosis Foundation claim that correct vitamin D levels can reduce fracture risk by up to 20% and recommend getting your daily helping through a short spell of exposure to sunlight every day. If only! Vitamin D dietary supplements can be an effective alternative, as can fatty types of fish such as salmon and mackerel.
